Securing the confidential client information in your firm’s possession is not only your professional obligation but also good business practice. In Preventing Law Firm Data Breaches (published in Law Practice Magazine, January/February 2012 issue), information and data security specialists John W. Simek and Sharon D. Nelson provide practical reminders on basic steps you need to take, at minimum, to protect your client data. Another helpful tool is the Self-Assessment Tool made available through Canada’s Privacy Commissioner. Using this information security audit, you can assess how well your firm is doing “…to take reasonable steps to safeguard the personal information in their custody or control from such risks as unauthorized access, collection, use, disclosure, copying, modification, disposal or destruction.” The Canadian Lawyers Insurance Association provides loss prevention information solely for the benefit of CLIA insured lawyers. The content and links provided in Loss Prevention eBytes are intended as resources to qualified lawyers who should exercise due care and their professional judgment in adapting or making use of any content.
