Voluntary Excess Program – Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage FAQs

The CLIA Voluntary Excess Program Renewal is now open! As a lawyer in a CLIA Subscribing jurisdiction, you have Mandatory Cyber insurance ranging from $100K to $250K for various common cyber claims. See our Cyber Insurance Overview information to better understand your mandatory coverage.

In addition, CLIA to offers a stand-alone cyber insurance product with higher limits than the cyber coverage we offer with the mandatory insurance. The stand-alone cyber insurance can be purchased in conjunction with the excess liability coverage or on its own.

Q: Are higher limits available for cyber coverage?

A: Yes. CLIA offers a stand-alone cyber insurance product, CLIA Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage, with higher limits than the cyber coverage we offer with the mandatory insurance. See our Cyber Insurance Overview materials for more information.

Q: Does the CLIA Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage offer additional coverage not found in the Mandatory Cyber coverage?

A: Yes. In addition to higher limits, the CLIA Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage offers additional base coverage for Multimedia & Intellectual Property Liability and Reputational Damage. Extension Coverage is also available for Electronic Theft, Computer Fraud & Telecommunications Fraud, and Social Engineering Fraud. There coverage extensions are available for an additional premium and are purchased in conjunction with Stand-Alone Cyber. See our Cyber Insurance Overview materials for more information.

Q: Do I have to purchase excess liability coverage to get cyber coverage?

A: The CLIA Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage can be purchased in conjunction with the excess liability coverage (VEP) or on its own.

Q: Is CLIA Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage only for large firms?

A: No. Any size firm can fall victim to a cyber attack. If you use the internet in any capacity, you and your law firm are targets for a cyber attack. CLIA Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage provides coverage for lawyers and law firms who may fall victim to a wide range of cyber attacks.

Q: When is the renewal period?

A: The online application for excess insurance products, including CLIA Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage, can be completed annually starting in early May by visiting the Excess Insurance section of the CLIA website.

Q: How do I apply?

Existing Customers

• The renewal period remains open until the end of June each year.

• Pricing may vary annually—request a quote before applying.

• Sign in to your account to access the pre-populated application form. Please update any information as needed.

New Customers

• Submit applications until the end of July. CLIA Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage cannot be prorated.

• Request a quote before applying.

• Create an account to access the application form when you're ready.

Q: What information should I gather before applying?

A: For CLIA Stand-Alone Cyber Coverage applications, firms must meet eligibility requirements. Contact cliacyber@ar-services.ca to receive the questions in advance if needed.
